Timo Werner is the name on everybody’s lips this morning, with the RB Leipzig striker being linked with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United – not a bad quartet, really.
United's midfield conundrum continues with Jose Mourinho emphatically denying that he is at loggerheads with Paul Pogba, though that doesn't necessarily mean the Red Devils are not looking at more midfield signings this summer - starting with Jean Michael Seri of Nice.
Meanwhile, the Gunners are also reportedly after Lyon star Nabil Fekir, while Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama is said to be of interest to Liverpool. For more on those stories and the best of the rest from Friday's papers, follow our dedicated live blog.

Willian has urged his Chelsea teammates to press on after their FA Cup routing of Championship side Hull City, writes Jack Rosser.

The Brazilian, who was named in his country’s World Cup squad by head coach Tite ahead of the Cup clash, opened the scoring after just 106 seconds on Friday night with a wonderful curling effort from outside the area.

He had a second before the break, too, when he nonchalantly rolled an effort past David Marshall, again from distance.

After a difficult spell the Blues are back to winning ways, but now face the daunting task of Barcelona’s visit in the Champions League next week, and Willian says they must keep working.

"It was a great game, not only by me but the whole team,” he told BT Sport.

“The hat-trick was almost there, I tried, but the most important thing was the win.

"After a difficult moment we are back to winning games. When you are winning games the confidence goes high. Now we have to carry on."
CHELSEA NEWS
Antonio Conte says his revitalised Chelsea side are ready to take on a run of big games following their FA Cup quarter final win, writes Jack Rosser.

The Blues cruised to a 4-0 win over Championship strugglers Hull City, with Willian bagging a brace, Olivier Giroud scoring a first goal since his move from Arsenal and Pedro notching his sixth of the season.

While Willy Caballero had to save a second half penalty to maintain a clean sheet, a place in the quarter final of the FA Cup was never in doubt for the hosts.

Conte’s side have won two on the bounce following woeful defeats to Bournemouth and Watford, and now face Barcelona, Manchester United and Manchester City in quick succession.

The squad took a short respite break following the defeat at Vicarage Road, and Conte insists they must be strong, but are ready for the challenge.

“I think that we lost two bad games, especially against Watford,” Conte told BT Sport.

“But we played those games at the end of a busy period, a very busy period, I think that we played a lot.

“Now, we are again with the right confidence, but don’t forget in the next two weeks we have to play massive games and we must be strong to face the games against Barcelona, United, City and then Crystal Palace – then Barcelona again – in the right way, but we are ready.”

Jose Mourinho his reiterated the need for Manchester United to sign a midfielder this summer while dismissing "lies" and "b******t" about his relationship with Paul Pogba, writes Simon Peach.

Mourinho has confirmed he and first-choice midfielder Pogba have no issues, and shot down recent reports that the France international is said to be unhappy at Old Trafford.

Still, the Portuguese coach will be left short of options this summer if Michael Carrick retires as expected, while Marouane Fellaini has been linked with a move to Turkey once his contract expires at the end of the season.

Talented midfielder Andreas Pereira should return a better player from this season's loan spell at Valencia, but Mourinho still plans to bolster the middle of the park this summer.

"We need to sign a midfield player because we are going to lose Michael Carrick," the United boss added.

"Of course, we need balance in the team. I told you that one or two months ago when we were speaking about the market.

"When some of you keep saying that we are going to buy that striker, that winger, that left winger, that right winger, I told you two months ago.

"You can accuse me of many, many things, but you cannot say that I lied to you. When I don't want to say things, I don't say (them). But I don't take you in other directions.

"When I told you a couple of months ago that we don't want to sign any striker or any winger and, yes, we are looking, and we are going to try to sign a midfield player, I told you that two months ago."

However, Mourinho says that the presence of Scott McTominay in his matchday squads and starting line-ups of late proves there are chances for young players to prove themselves at United.

"If, for you, promotion is that they train regularly with us, they have been promoted for a long time," Mourinho said when asked about the likes of Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes.

"Scott McTominay didn't arrive here from the moon. Before he came to the first-team he trained with us many times last season.

"He came to us in pre-season and then we realised that with Andreas Pereira going to Valencia, we decided not to buy another player because we had Scott McTominay ready to step up.

"If that's the concept of promotion, the kids are promoted all the time. Maybe tomorrow I will have one of the kids on the bench.

"The objective of having a squad that is not so big is exactly to be open for this.

"This week, for example, we didn't have a few players with injuries and small things we wanted to protect and didn't train with the team and made individual training, the kids trained with us yesterday and before that."

Mourinho angrily dismissed suggestions that his relationship with Pogba has become strained, though called for more from Pogba on the pitch.

"I think you are nice with your words because when you say 'a lot of speculation' (regarding Pogba) you should say a lot of lies," the Portuguese said.

"Because I accept, and I can speak on Paul's behalf without any kind of problem, Paul accepts that he has not been playing well in the last few matches. But that's all.

"And if you want to speak about it, then that's one thing and then your word 'speculation' maybe makes a little bit of sense, but the majority of things you can read and listen, don't be nice, be objective and say (it's) lies.

"I don't have to speak with you about my conversations with my players. I don't have to tell you anything about it.

"It is my problem, it is the player's problem. A big lie that our relationship is not good, a big lie that we don't communicate, a big lie that we don't agree with his positions and his involvement in the dynamic of the team.

"So, be objective and say what we all know: in the last couple of matches he didn't play well. Period. End of story.

"Now, it's my problem and Paul's problem to deal with it and try to improve his performance level. You don't need to be a liar."
Jose Mourinho insists there is no rift with Paul Pogba... and it seems as though Real Madrid aren't keen on the Manchester United midfielder anyway.

Spanish football writer Guillem Balague told Sky Sports: "It is normal that when things are not perfect with the superstar of a big club, stories emerge in the media.

"Regarding Pogba, a leak to French publication L'Equipe suggested he wants a different position on the pitch to improve his performances.

"When reports like that emerge, don't be surprised that reports claiming Real Madrid want him soon follow.

"But they don't, they do not have the money to finance such a deal after they buy their main targets this summer. Perhaps more importantly, Real president Florentino Perez does not view him as a target."
Now then... here's an intriguing story from The Daily Mail regarding Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama.

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring developments with the Spurs holding midfielder not getting a huge amount of game time recently despite returning from a knee injury - and his stunning goal at Anfield can't have hurt.

The Mail suggests that the Kenyan is a potential target for the Reds - along with Manchester United and Chelsea - though knows a fair few of the Liverpool players from his time at Southampton.

With Naby Keita also moving to Anfield this summer, Liverpool fans can at least dream for the moment of having a solid midfield to back up that world-class front line...
CHELSEA NEWS
Chelsea's Antonio Conte revealed his team's convincing performance in their 4-0 defeat of Hull has given him a selection dilemma for Tuesday's Champions League tie with Barcelona.

The manager had rotated his team for the FA Cup fifth-round visit of the Championship Tigers and ahead of their fixtures with Barca, Manchester United and Manchester City, and then saw several fringe players impress.

Two goals from Willian and further finishes from Pedro and Olivier Giroud, the latter his first for the club since his arrival from Arsenal, essentially secured victory by half-time, and came in the absence of Eden Hazard, Andreas Christensen, Thibaut Courtois and N'Golo Kante.

Alvaro Morata is another the 48-year-old Conte may previously have considered a likely starter for the last-16 first-leg visit of Barca and, asked about his team's performance, he said: "I'm very happy. Before an important game, against Barcelona, I go to my house with many doubts in my mind.

"'Which is the best starting XI to start the game against Barcelona?' But it's right to be so. We must take the right time to make the best decision to pick the best XI to start that game.

"We started with great concentration and determination. We must be pleased, especially because we are in the (quarter-finals) in this competition. The first half was impressive because we scored four goals. The game was very compact.

"In the second half we tried to manage the game. In England that's very difficult, because anything can happen."

Jose Mourinho angrily dismissed "lies" and "b******t" about his relationship with Paul Pogba - but the Manchester United manager does want more from his midfielder, starting in the FA Cup at Huddersfield.

The build-up to Saturday's fifth-round clash in West Yorkshire has focused around the 24-year-old as reports had suggested he was irritated at playing so deep, and was even regretting re-joining United.

Mourinho was also reported to be annoyed by Pogba's inability to function in a two-man midfield, but all that talk has been dismissed out of hand by the United boss.

Mourinho confirmed Pogba will start at Huddersfield in an intense press conference previewing the fifth-round clash.

Criticism and scrutiny from pundits has clearly got under the United manager's skin - "I would like them to tell me which position Pogba played in against Newcastle" - and threw questions to reporters in the room.

Mourinho clarified that Pogba's preferred formation is 4-3-3 and playing as an "eight on the left", before urging the media to explain the game and not talk "b******t".

"He was out for a long, long time and in this moment, he is not playing well," the United boss said, referring to Pogba's hamstring injury. "Period.

"And the team needs him at a good level and when he is not a good level the team is not as good as when he plays phenomenal.

"I think it happens with every team when the best players, the most crucial players for some reason are not performing. Period."

Eric Bailly is in line to return at Huddersfield after a three-month absence with an ankle injury, but Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford will miss out with unspecified muscle complaints.

Olivier Giroud wants to repay the confidence Antonio Conte has shown in him in his early weeks at Chelsea.

The French striker joined from London rivals Arsenal on deadline day, replacing Michy Batshuayi following his loan move to Borussia Dortmund.

Giroud bagged his first goal for the club during the comfortable 4-0 FA Cup victory over Hull City on Friday night, with Alvaro Morata named on the bench as the Spaniard eases his way back from injury.

Whether or not Giroud makes the starting line-up for Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Barcelona is another matter, but he’s ready to repay Conte’s faith.

“Of course us strikers, they need a real human relationship with the coach,” he told BT Sport.

“It’s nice to have the confidence of the coach, of the staff, and I just want to give it back.

“I feel like the last two opportunities [I’ve been given] I’ve brought my small thing to the big machine, Chelsea.”
ARSENAL NEWS
Arsenal did some solid business in January, but the one thing you could argue is that for all Arsene Wenger's attacking riches, he has yet to bolster the defence or midfield adequately.

It makes perfect sense, then, that Arsenal are being linked with a big summer move for another playmaker, as the Mail reports that Lyon star Nabil Fekir is Wenger's No.1 target.

The 24-year-old could well be a star for France at this summer's World Cup, and is currently being rated at £45m - which seems a little low given recent transfer prices.

There is an argument to suggest that Fekir could possibly thrive in a deeper role in the same way Santi Cazorla did before his cruel injury problems, but Arsenal fans may want to see the team strengthened further back before more diminutive playmakers are signed.

Timo Werner is a man in demand - according to The Sun, at least.

According to the newspaper, Werner has rejected a new contract at RB Leipzig, which could leave the Bundesliga club opens to selling him.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal are all linked with the £50m-rated striker, though that valuation could well rise if he adds to his 16 goals this season.
Good morning and welcome to Standard Sport's LIVE blog covering the latest Premier League news, transfer gossip and rumours.
Mohamed Elneny says Arsenal sent out a warning to the rest of the Europa League with their 3-0 win in Ostersund on Thursday, writes James Benge.
The Gunners cruised into a two-goal lead inside 24 minutes in central Sweden, Nacho Monreal striking the opener before Ostersund defender Sotirios Papagiannopoulos turned a Henrikh Mkhitaryan cross past his own goalkeeper.
Mesut Ozil wrapped up a victory that leaves Arsenal well on course for the round of 16 ahead of next week’s second leg tie and, Elneny believes, fired a shot across the bows of their rivals in the Europa League.
“To win away from home by a three-goal margin sends out a strong message to other teams in this competition,” Elneny told beIN Sports.
“We hope to win the Europa League title in order to qualify for next season’s Champions League. That’s only in case we don’t get a top-four spot in the league this season.
“One of the main reasons we are really focused on winning the Europa League title is to make up for the Premier League title if we’re not able to win it.”
Arsenal are most bookmakers’ second favourites to win the Europa League behind Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that his side’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League may be stronger in Europe’s second-tier competition.
The Gunners are eight points off fourth-placed Chelsea with 11 games to go in the league.
West Bromwich Albion are investigating four players after they were involved in an incident during a training camp in Spain, the Premier League club said on Friday.

Following their 3-0 league defeat by champions Chelsea on Monday, West Brom left for a warm-weather training camp in Barcelona to prepare for Saturday's FA Cup fifth-round clash against Southampton.
"The club can confirm that four senior players were involved in an incident during this week's mid-winter training trip to Spain," the club said in a statement without elaborating.
"The club has instigated its own investigation into the incident and the players will be subject to the full rigours of our internal disciplinary procedures.
"Until such time as that investigation has been completed, the club will not be making any further comment."
Alan Pardew's relegation-threatened side are at the bottom of the league table with three wins, 11 draws and 13 losses in their 27 matches.
Earlier this week, West Brom sacked chairman John Williams and chief executive Martin Goodman after the club's poor results this season.

Frank Lampard always knew nothing would stop Andreas Christensen from making it at Chelsea — even a potential record bid for Virgil van Dijk.

Lampard was still a key Chelsea player when Christensen joined the club’s academy from Brondby at the age of just 15. The Blues legend had seen many bright prospects tipped for Chelsea stardom over the years only to fall at one obstacle or another.

Christensen stood out, though, and the now-retired Lampard never had any doubts that the player would make it, even when Chelsea were in the running to buy Van Dijk from Southampton last summer.

The Dutchman eventually joined Liverpool for £75million in January. Had Van Dijk joined Chelsea instead, Lampard is convinced Christensen would still be in the current side.

He told Standard Sport: “Even if Van Dijk had come in, the player Christensen is, he’d have handled anything.

“You put a team around those players even at his age. He wouldn’t have had a problem whoever they signed.

“I trained with him a fair bit when I was still there. We were all very aware of his abilities. He came over to join in senior sessions when he was 16 and was very impressive.

“Some young players were not ready for the increase in speed of the game, to make decisions and choices on the ball when they were invited to join in.

“But even at that young age you could see he had a composure and an awareness about him that made him fit straight in.”

Like many of his predecessors and those who have followed him into the academy, Christensen was sent away on loan to get first-team experience.

After two impressive years at Borussia Monchengladbach, he was rewarded with a place in Antonio Conte’s squad at the start of the season.

But within a matter of weeks, the  21-year-old had gone from back-up player to taking David Luiz’s position in the middle of the back three.

Lampard said: “Chelsea take a lot of criticism for loaning players out but Andreas is a perfect example of how it’s done right.

“It is massively important for the academy and the young players to see Christensen in the first team now. He is a great example for everyone.

“The young players can learn from his application. He has shown if you do things right, apply yourself, you will get your chance.”

The greatest sign of Christensen’s influence was the sight of Chelsea conceding seven goals without him against Bournemouth and Watford.

Chelsea have huge fixtures over the next few weeks, including the FA Cup fifth-round match at home against Hull City tonight, the Champions League clash with Barcelona on Tuesday and League games at Manchester United and Manchester City, so no wonder his swift recovery from a hamstring problem was greeted with relief.

Lampard cannot emphasis enough what a valuable asset the Denmark international has become. “At his age and with the talent he’s got, he is worth an awful lot of money,” he said.

“Chelsea have signed him to a long-term contract so you can put whatever figure you want on it. But they are never going to sell him. He is not going anywhere.

“It’s very important that he’s back fit again for these big games because he is a key player and this is crunch time of the season.”

Lampard is not the only one to appreciate Christensen’s talent. He is one of five nominees in the Young Player of the Year category at the London Football Awards, which take place on March 1.

Given Lampard’s obvious loyalties, one might assume that he does not give Ryan Sessegnon, Davinson Sanchez, Harry Winks and Ainsley Maitland-Niles much of a chance.

However, he said: “It’s a really strong category and you can make a case for all of them. For example, Davinson is not playing like a 21-year-old. The way he’s come into the Premier League, a real step up in quality from the Dutch League, has been impressive.

“Winks has become a real contender for the England squad, especially when playing regularly. But they have all made giant steps in the last year and are deservedly in the running.”

Mauricio Pochettino has apologised to Rochdale for suggesting their pitch would compromise the safety of his players, writes Tom Collomosse.

The League One club have relaid their playing surface after the previous version - heavily sanded following poor weather - was deemed unfit to stage Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie against Pochettino’s Tottenham side.

Rochdale are confident the new pitch at Spotland will hold up well and Pochettino regrets giving the impression that his players were unwilling to play there.

“I want to apologise if anyone at Rochdale, such as the chairman (Chris Dunphy) took it in the wrong way,” said Pochettino. “My idea was to care for the players of Rochdale.

“After we beat Newport in the fourth-round replay, their manager Michael Flynn showed me a picture of the pitch and it wasn’t great.

“I wanted to ensure their players and my players would be safe, but I was always very respectful.

“But now I have seen pictures and videos of the new pitch on the Rochdale website and I need to congratulate them. The effort was massive, to put in a new pitch so we can play without risk. I was always confident and trusted them that they would be able to fix the problem.”

A local referee is on standby to inspect the pitch if the weather overnight is poor, but both Rochdale and the FA are confident the game will go ahead as scheduled.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has let rip on what he claims are "lies" about his relationship with Paul Pogba, writes Simon Peach.

Pogba's happiness at Old Trafford has dominated the news agenda this week, with the midfielder reportedly irritated at being asked to play so deep and even said to be regretting his return to Manchester.

Mourinho has also apparently been annoyed by Pogba's inability to function in a two-man midfield, but all that talk has been dismissed out of hand by the United boss.

"I think you are nice with your words because when you say 'a lot of speculation' you should say a lot of lies," the Portuguese said.

Antonio Conte should resist the temptation to rotate players for this game and instead pick the team he intends to use against Barcelona next week, says Danny Murphy.

Chelsea have a four-day break before Barca arrive at Stamford Bridge.

With respect, any Chelsea XI should be able to beat Hull, who are 21st in the Championship, so why not use it as important preparation for Barcelona?

Sometimes resting players can backfire. I know managers have to pay attention to the physical data and clearly you shouldn’t play someone if he is carrying a knock, but sometimes players need to play.

If they rest, they lose rhythm. If they know they’re not playing the next game, they probably don’t train with the same intensity as they might otherwise. Unless it was the end of the season and we were playing three games per week, I always preferred to play than to rest and if I did rest, I rarely felt the benefit the next time I did play.

And anyway, when you play Barcelona, you don’t feel tired going into the game. If you’ve won the previous one — as Chelsea really should — then you carry momentum into the game.

Too often, managers prepare for games in ‘coach mode’ and forget about what is best for their players and the team. Conte should avoid making that mistake here if he wants to give his team the best chance of progress in Europe.
ARSENAL NEWS
Alex Iwobi claimed Arsenal can still salvage their season by winning the Europa League and securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The Gunners took a giant stride towards the last 16 of Europe’s second-tier competition with a comfortable 3-0 win here in Ostersund last night.
Nacho Monreal and Mesut Ozil scored either side of a Sotirios Papagiannopoulos own goal to put Arsenal in control ahead of next Thursday’s return leg at Emirates Stadium.
The Europa League is increasingly looking as though it will provide their best chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League as the Gunners lie eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with 11 games remaining.
However, Iwobi believes the Gunners have not given up domestically and can still rescue a troubled campaign to date.
Asked if the players believed Europa League glory was the most likely route back to the Champions League, the midfielder told Standard Sport: “No, we have to do our best in both competitions. That’s what we are trying to do: get top four and also win this competition. That’s the aim.”
Iwobi also warned Arsenal cannot afford any complacency in next Thursday’s second leg, especially with the Carabao Cup Final against Manchester City to come three days’ later.
“You could say that [we have one foot in the next round] but there is still a job to do and we have to do it at home,” he said. “There is still half the tie to play.
“First we have to focus on Thursday, take each game step by step. We have to prepare one more game before the cup final.”

Mauricio Pochettino has backed Harry Kane to score 50 goals for Tottenham this season and break Clive Allen’s record in the process.

Allen’s 49 strikes in the 1986-87 campaign have never been bettered by a Spurs player in a single campaign, yet Kane has 33 in all competitions this season with three months still remaining until its conclusion.

Pochettino said: “He is capable of everything. I hope he can maybe break this record because I trust him and I know him very well. We see him every day working and I can tell you he is capable of everything in football.

“If any player can do it, it is him. He has the mentality, the determination and of course the talent.”

Kane maybe rested for Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie at Rochdale, which Pochettino argues will be tougher than either of Spurs’ last two matches, against Arsenal and Juventus.

Tottenham beat Arsenal 1-0 and produced a fine performance to draw 2-2 in Turin but Pochettino is wary of the League One club, especially after his side needed a replay to get past Newport, of League Two, in round four.

Pochettino added: “It will be a more difficult game because the challenge is to be motivated. We want to go further in this competition but we have to be at our best if we want to win.

“If we win, we are one step closer to winning a title. If we can go further, maybe the fact we are playing home games at Wembley is a little advantage, as we have played there a lot now and it is starting to feel like home.

“We have to forget about Juventus and Arsenal. There is no time to enjoy those performances, because we now have to be focused on a different competition.”

Harry Kane could be left out of the squad for Tottenham’s FA Cup tie at Rochdale as Lucas Moura prepares to make his full debut for the club.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed Kane had twisted an ankle in the 2-2 Champions League draw at Juventus on Tuesday, and though he insists the damage is not severe, it may be enough to ensure Kane is only on the bench or is left out of the squad altogether.

Pochettino already plans to make several changes to the XI that started in Turin, with Toby Alderweireld, Harry Winks, Fernando Llorente, Moussa Sissoko, Victor Wanyama and Heung-min Son all expected to start along with Lucas.

The situation is different for Kane, however. Pochettino explained: “Harry twisted his ankle and received some knocks. We need to assess on Saturday if he is fit. Maybe he will have the chance to start, but if he is not 100 per cent, he may be on the bench.

“If we decide he is not fit enough even to play half-an-hour or 20 minutes then he may stay in London with other players. We need to decide whether he has a chance for Sunday.”

Lucas made his first Spurs appearance as a substitute in the closing minutes in Turin and Pochettino has been working the Brazilian hard to improve is fitness since his £24.5million move from Paris St Germain last month.

Pochettino added: “We are pushing him and we are thinking about giving him a chance to start the game. We are so happy with him, the way he is working. We will assess him but maybe he has the chance to play.”
